Sodium Acetate Trihydrate is a hydrated form of Sodium Acetate. It contains three molecules of water for each molecule of Sodium Acetate. Derived from the reaction between sodium hydroxide and acetic acid.
Chemical Formula: : NaC2H3O2. .3H2O
Appearance: Colorless to white crystals or crystalline powder.
Uses:
Food Additive: Utilized as a food additive, primarily as a flavoring agent, acidity regulator, and preservative. Generally recognized as safe [GRAS]. Commonly used to add a salty or vinegary flavor to snacks, sauces, condiments, and pickled foods.
Pharmaceutical: Used as an excipient or active ingredient in medications. Sometimes included in oral and topical preparations for its buffering properties, which help maintain the pH of solutions and improve the stability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Used for dialysis solutions and adjust body fluid pH levels. It can be utilized as an expectorant for medical purposes.
Laboratory Applications: Used as a reagent, buffer solution, or pH regulator in experiments and analytical procedures. It is particularly useful in biochemical and molecular biology research.
Chemical Industry: Sodium Acetate Trihydrate is used as a source of sodium and acetate ions in chemical reactions and processes. Often used as a buffer solution in chemical synthesis and as a pH regulator in the production of pharmaceuticals, dyes, and other chemical compounds. Used as a mordant to improve dye adhesion to fabrics and to synthesize sodium-based chemicals. Used as a precursor compound for synthesizing sodium-based chemicals.
Additional Applications: Hot packs or hand warmers.
