Potassium Iodate is a chemical compound with the formula KIO₃. It is a white crystalline solid that consists of potassium ions (K⁺) and iodate ions (IO₃⁻). Potassium iodate is used for in the field of iodine fortification and as a source of iodine in food preservation and medical applications.
Chemical Formula: KIO₃
Appearance: A fine white crystalline powder or a colorless to white crystals.
Uses:
Food Preservation: Potassium iodate may be used as a food additive and preservative to inhibit microbial growth and extend the shelf life of certain food products. It is particularly effective in controlling the growth of bacteria, molds, and yeasts that can spoil food and cause foodborne illnesses.
Water Treatment: In water treatment processes, it is used as a disinfectant and oxidizing agent to remove organic contaminants, bacteria, and pathogens from drinking water supplies.
Chemical Manufacturing: In analytical chemistry, potassium iodate is used as a primary standard in iodometric titrations to determine the concentration of reducing agents, such as thiosulfates and sulfites, in solution. It reacts with reducing agents to liberate iodine, which is then titrated with a standardized solution of sodium thiosulfate to determine the analyte concentration.
Medical Applications: Potassium iodate has medical applications, particularly in the treatment of iodine deficiency disorders and as a source of iodine supplementation in individuals with thyroid disorders or iodine deficiencies.
