Furfural

Furfural is a colorless to yellowish liquid with a distinctive aromatic odor. It is soluble in most organic solvents but has limited solubility in water.

Appearance: At room temperature, furfural may appear as a clear liquid, but it can darken upon exposure to air and light, forming a brownish tint.

Uses:

• Fuel Additive: Furfural can be used as a fuel additive or biofuel component due to its high energy content and favorable combustion properties. It can be blended with gasoline or diesel fuels to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

• Solvent: Due to its excellent solvency properties, furfural is utilized as a solvent in the extraction of compounds, such as phenolics, resins, and oils. Effective for extracting aromatic compounds from natural sources.

• Preservative: It exhibits antimicrobial properties and can act as a preservative in certain food formulations, helping to extend shelf life by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms.

• Flavor and Fragrance Industry: Utilized in the flavor and fragrance industry as a natural flavoring agent and fragrance ingredient. It imparts a characteristic aroma reminiscent of almonds or caramel and is used in food products, beverages, and perfumes.

• Chemical Manufacturing: In the manufacture of agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals it serves as a raw material for the production of furan-based compounds, including furfuryl alcohol, furan, and maleic anhydride.
