Calcium Hydroxide

Calcium Hydroxide, also known as slaked lime or hydrated lime. It forms when calcium oxide (quicklime) reacts with water. Calcium hydroxide is sparingly soluble in water, producing a strongly alkaline solution known as lime water. It has industrial, environmental, and pharmaceutical applications.

Uses:

• Food Industry: It is primarily considered as a food additive in the food industry. It is used as a pH regulator, firming agent, and processing aid in food products, including pickles, canned vegetables, tortillas, and cornmeal.

• Pharmaceuticals: Calcium hydroxide can be used as a topical antiseptic to treat minor wounds and burns. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry for pH regulation in various formulations.

• Coating agent: In pharmaceutical tablets and capsules, it can be used as a coating agent to improve stability and control the release of active ingredients.

• Wastewater Treatment: Calcium hydroxide is typically used in wastewater treatment processes to adjust pH levels, remove heavy metals, and precipitate impurities such as phosphates and sulfates. It helps neutralize acidic wastewater and promote flocculation and sedimentation.

• Construction Industry: In the construction industry it is an ingredient in mortar, plaster, and cement. It reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form calcium carbonate, which strengthens and stabilizes these building materials over time.
