Calcium Chloride Anhydrous is the most common form of calcium chloride.  Consists of Calcium Chloride molecules (CaCl₂) bound to two water molecules (2H₂O) that are soluble in water.

Chemical Formula: CaCl₂·2H₂O

Appearance: A white, odorless crystalline solid.

Uses and Common Applications:

  • Nutritional Supplements: Calcium Chloride Anhydrous is used as a source of calcium in nutritional supplements and nutraceutical formulations.

  • Pharmaceutical Excipient: Used as an excipient in pharmaceutical formulations to adjust the pH of solutions or suspensions, to provide stability, and to aid in the dissolution of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Its hygroscopic properties may also be utilized in certain formulations with critical moisture control.

  • Buffering Agent: Calcium chloride Anhydrous can function as a buffering agent in pharmaceuticals by helping to maintain the pH of solutions within a specific range.

  • Topical Applications: In some cases, calcium chloride Anhydrous may be included in topical formulations such as ointments or creams for its astringent properties or as a pH adjuster.

  • Medicinal Applications: In medicine, used in formulations such as intravenous fluids to replenish electrolytes and treat conditions like hypocalcemia (low calcium).

  • Food Additive: It is used as a food additive, primarily as a firming agent in canned vegetables and as a calcium fortifier in certain beverages and snacks.

  • Desiccant: It is used as a desiccant to absorb moisture from the air and keep environments dry. This property makes it useful in preserving perishable goods, preventing rust and corrosion, and controlling humidity.

  • Additional Applications: Used in de-icing, dust control, concrete setting, petroleum refining, metal processing, water treatment, and manufacturing of dyes and pigments.
